The Kindness of Strangers...

The paperchase is finally winding down. We need a few more items notarized and then they'll be sent off for state authentication. One piece of the puzzle was a local background check done by our county sheriff's office. We had this done for the homestudy two months ago but it wasn't notarized (sick of that word yet? We sure are!) which is a requirement for the dossier. Can you believe that a sheriff's office with dozens of employees doesn't have a notary? They told us to bring one. Well, since we have yet to hire a personal notary who follows us around, I looked in the yellow pages. I found a mobile closing service that does mortgages so I called them assuming we'd fork over about $40 to have someone meet us there and provide the requisite stamp. The nice fellow with whom I spoke said he'd ask around since they've never had this request. Later that night, a gentleman called and said he'd be happy to meet us there, at our convenience, to notarize the letter. He understood our situation because he and his wife are in the process of adopting, too. Not only that, but he wouldn't let us pay him. Not a cent. Not even for gas.

:o)
